Prestigious prize for Bert van der Kogel

By Paul Rijken on 02 September 2009

During the ’European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology’ (ESTRO) meeting, held in Maastricht from August 30th until September 3rd, 2009, Bert van der Kogel has received the 14th Gray Medal.

This prestigious ’Gray Medal’ was initiated by the ’International Commission on Radiation Units & Measurements’ (ICRU) in 1967 and is regularly awarded to scientists having made a major contribution in the field of Radiation Oncology, Medical Imaging or Basic Science. It is the first time a European radiobiologist receives this prize.
Bert’s systematic research on all areas of radiation response and damage to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) turned him into one of the world’s experts in this field. His work provided new insights in the calculations of radiation tolerance of healthy tissues that are getting more important when applying new radiation techniques in the clinic.
More information on the prize can be found on the ICRU website.
